NOT LION

Firstly we need congratulate our new first grade captain, Trent "Crosby" Nash.

Regular captain Simon "Johnny Cash - King of Country" Moore and his reliable sidekick Troy Goodwin are unavailable for this weekend's one-day match because of representative commitments.

Knowing this "Crosby" put his hand up for the position of stand-in skipper against Uni last Saturday and his claims cannot be ignored.

Following Scott Montfoolery’s gutsy attempt to win the game in one single strike, Jeremy Ford had to hit the winning runs before Crosby called the game off.

Johnny Cash was standing downstairs at Uni and looked up to the scorers area and asked the score.

Eager to assist his new skipper, Crosby asked Dan The Big Mahn the correct score and was told Merewether had passed Uni’s score for the loss of six wickets.

Instead of relaying this information to Johnny Cash, who had no intention of calling the game off, Crosby thought it would be wise to yell out the batsmen the game was over and called them in.

I’m told the look on Johnny Cash’s face was something to be seen.

Congrats to Josh Geary on his continued success and his top score of 66 last Saturday handed first grade their first win in the Saturday comp this year.

The lanky leftie from Maitland has earned the nicknames Gearsa, Geezer, Top Gear and The Stig .

My personal favourite is The Stig, or just simply Stig, but make up your own mind on that one. However Josh prefers to be know by the name of his famous unkle "Glen" from the Good Guys.

Former Australia Country XI fast bowler Duncan McIlveen led from the front as skipper of second grade by dropping the first of eight chances at Empire on Saturday.

Defending 337 and only playing against Uni, Dunc thought he would keep it a bit interesting and Jerk Downing followed suit soon after when he grassed a sitter.

Elliott McLeod, sub-fielder Goffo, Josh Logo-Pye, Sponge Gilmour and Kid Keeper Josh Forsyth all put tough chances down but Ben Egan stole the show.

Many astute judges with far too many cricket games under their belt said Began’s was worst ever.

Isaac “Bomber” Lancaster was the hero as fourth grade pulled off a miraculous win defending 139.

Uni looked in control at 3-59 after the first day but 15-year-old Bomber took them apart with figures of 4-28 off 11 overs to dismiss them for 119.

A-grade joined third grade on the sidelines as rain ruined their chances of victory but AR4s (The Prancing Lions) cruised to a comfortable 150-run win and the Delinquents (D6s) also got a cash.

Rumour has it Ben McLeod took three wickets but as I was not there, this cannot b e confirmed, and never will be.

That leaves AR1s as the Wanka’s of the Week because they got rolled for 64 chasing 214 and cost the rest of the club a PRESIDENT’S KEG.

Yes, that’s right you clowns, a free keg from the Prez.

Round 4 Day 1 Report

NOT LION

Superstar status is something that many of us cannot comprehend but for our skipper Simon Moore it is second nature.

When David Beckham scores a goal it is world news but no-one reports when he misses.

The Wog rolls a bit higher above the clouds than Becks and even made the Sunday papers for scoring a "fourth ball duck".

I think the little rotund Sun-Herald reporter from Dubbo also made mention in the story somewhere that Goody threw in a sneaky 131.

Josh "Top" Geary scored a solid 49 and Mule Gilmour 43 in 299 against Hamwicks at No.1 Sportsground.

Great to see Maddi Flowers there as well supporting her brother Evan's old club.

*****

The running of the 150th Melbourne Cup could play a large part in second grade's fortune after Began (66) and Josh Logo (49) helped the Lions to 188 at Passmores Business and Management College.

Hamwicks are 3-87 in reply but the Red Terror (Pie) will be back from Melbourne to charge in next week.

That's where the result of the cup becomes important because the more he wins the less likely he is to come home.

*****

Thirsty Thirds are in the box seat at 4-48 chasing Hamwicks' 172 and should cruise to victory or they could cost the rest of the club a President's Keg.

Just think long and hard about that lads.

*****

Fighting Fours could be without skipper Drunken Stench this week after he was taken to John Hunter Hospital on Saturday night with arse cramps.

Having borrowed his son Matthew's wicket-keeping gear, Stenchy proceeded to put on a display behind the stumps but it came at a cost.

The fours are chasing 173 after Andrew Palmer (three) Double D (two) and Bucko (two) got the wickets.

Double D is 40 not out out of 0-48 in reply.

*****

Paul Walsh put on a fielding clinic when the Lions A-grade side thumped Wests in the scenic surrounds of the Hunter River at Hexham Park.

Lyle "Tommy" McGuigan was the first bowler to suffer from Walshy's wizadry when he put one down early.

Big Merv McLachlan was reduced to tears of laughter when Walshy dropped another of his bowling.

Camped on the fence so he could take in the serenity, Walshy had time to roll out the deck chair and cracked himself a beer as the ball lobbed in his direction.

He reckoned he only dropped it to give Wests a hand as they limped to 100 and Merv (30) and Davo (28*) steered the Lions to 4-103.

*****

Varno's team made Merewether history on Saturday when they claimed back-to-back wins for the first time since joining the club a few weeks ago.

Mick scored 43 of their 114 and John Mundey chipped in with 35. Craig Swilks bowled well and took 3-18 when Nelsons Bay scored 9-109.

*****

The former B52 bombers batted first on a interesting wicket. Gregy Aurthur top scored with 31, Toby Wilcher with a quick fire 17 to be all out for 101. The Medaowie Yowie bowled well for 10 overs to get figures of 4-24. Bucket hands Gregy Aurthur took one of the best slip catches in the clubs history and the lads bundled the opposition out for 72. Well done boys!

*****

Great to see new recruit Dion Nash break through with his first five-wicket haul for the club in the second round of the SCG Country Cup on Sunday.

Don Nash took some punishment in his first couple of overs but fought back brilliantly to take 5 wickets with a very tight second spell.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young kept The Entrance to 180-odd and Moorey took his weekend average to 44 when he scored 88. Moore made a fashion statement by being forced to wear a different batting pad on each leg. One of his pads went missing after Saturdays game. The rumor has it that it is a revenge attack against the MooreBush vest Mafia pillaging Tim O'Niell Sydney uni vest. Good luck to Tim O'Niell taking the law into his own hands and I'm sure this one is not over yet!

The Gilmour Girls contributed well with Sam taking a couple of wickets and scoring 60 not out with a sizzling six.

Sponge took a wicket first ball and finished with 1-20 off 7 overs.

Reminder to Chad White, Steve Pratt, Tim Forsyth and Marcus Christensen that training is NOT on tomorrow

Should change their weekly routine enormously.

Round 3 - V Stockton 2nd Week
NOT LION

Marcus Christensen. Remember the name, you will hear it a bit more this week. The big man from the Two Blue Oyster Bar played his first game for the club on Saturday and it was quite special.

Marcus came straight from work in the mines at Muswellbrook and opened the bowling in third grade at Empire Park

He took a sneaky 8-3 as Gilligan's Island thirds made 31 off 10.2 overs.

They made 91 in their second dig and Marcus took 4-26 to give him 12 in his first game, not a bad effort.

*****

First grade lost to Gilligan's on Saturday because the home side decided that walking was only an option if they missed the ferry (its ok, we know where he lives).

But Sunday was even better when the lads travelled to Toukley for a game of SCG Country Cup.

Always a chance of playing after rain stopped play in Central Coast cricket on Saturday afternoon, the boys were washed out and jumped back on the bus and came home

Great way to spend a Sunday morning and thanks to Toukley for letting us spend it with them.... beautiful. The other highlight was Nashy almost painting the inside of the bus with an up an under as he felt a bit "travel sick".

*****

Jerk Downing got four wickets in second grade's win at Learmonth Park, easily the worst cricket ground in Australia, and the lads got the chocolates.

Sponge got 2-35 in his first game back in a Lions cap and was comfortably the best left-arm bowler on the day. Party Pie also chipped in with a lazy 3-28, but his house mate Pie says he needs a bit more practice with his back flip technique after putting a Logan pie size hole in their garage attempting one on Friday night.

Good luck to Dunc and the boys this year and even better luck to Dunc at the judiciary this week.

Macca has been charged with bringing the game into disrepute for allowing Chad to attempt some left-arm finger slow stuff.

Roobish.

*****

The reason Tim Forsyth scored 115 in 4th grade last week was because he had to bowl this week and wanted to break even.

From all reports his first over went for about half of his 115 but then they missed a couple of full-tosses and he grabbed two wickets.

Lord knows how, but they got the cookies in the end.

*****

Robbie Guy put on a great display on Saturday night with one of the sharpest necked harpooners I've seen which will make good competition for Josh Logo.

Not sure what Rob did to deserve the schooner but lets give it to him again next week.

It sure beats giving it to Merv.

*****
The AR4 lads had a tough day at the office after bowling out Elliots Lambton for 158, the were bundled out for 37 runs. The highlight of the day was seeing the 2 new players to the club from NZ Brett and Jermain enjoying the presentations with a couple of good skulls.

*****

Well done to the boys in AR1's as they knocked up their first win of the season. Boosted with star allrounder Martin Krause, the lads made 185 in reply to dock-sides 181. But the real hero of the day was Mearsy smashing 99 not out.

Round 3 - V Stockton 1st Week
Merewether continues to tackle the big issues and keeping a lid on violence in our society is one of the bigger ones.

On Saturday night new recruit Sam "Mule" Gilmour and returning cousin Nathan "Sponge" Gilmour joined a table of mates at a Kerry O'Keeffe dinner.

Sam's mouth must have been dry after that howling wind all day at Lynn Oval and there are few remedies better for a dry, dusty throat than a couple cold beers.

I'm not sure what Sponge's excuse was because second grade got washed out at Learmonth Park, but he joined in anyway.

From all reports it was a great night and the boys were waiting outside the Alder Park Bowlo for a Taxi when they witnessed a drunk driver crash into several parked cars.

The driver jumped from his vehicle and took off when he realised what he had done so the Mule took off after him, caught him and made his fourth tackle for the season.

Mule held the dude on the ground until the police arrived and later admitted he was as drunk as the driver when making his citizens arrest.

*****

New recruit Jono Dunn batted brilliantly to score 86 and the club captain surprised many Prince of Wales bar staff scoring 67 as Merewether made 276 against Stockton at Gilligan's Island.

Fanta Pants Bouncer Crittenden lived up to his name and banged out his brother as the Islanders finished 1-77 in reply.

*****

Congratulations must go to a wonderful relationship that was confirmed at Bar Beach on Saturday as both are valued members of the Merewether club.

Jimmy Dillon and Marcus Christensen.

The two boys are from different sides of the tracks and that was evident when Dillo from Merewether-Carlton tried several times to run out Marcus who is a Wanderers boy.

After several alleged mix-ups they decided to unite as a team and put on a stunn ing partnership that involved from big hitting from Marcus and some great improvisation from Dillo.

Dillo has invented a stand-up swivel shot that young Aussie star Steve Smith would be proud of.

Dillo top-scored with 53, Marcus clubbed 42 and Jarrad Bounser got 31 as the Lions made 9-229 on a heavily top-soiled ground.

*****

On a slightly more serious note congratulations to Rat and Kristy on their marriage that took place on Saturday.

The service at Civic Park was entertaining in the wind but the speeches back at Cooks Hill Surf Club provided a lot more humour.

Rat's Mum took the piss out of him just as good as his best man Joel but, let's face it, they did have plenty to work.

Kristy looked wonderful and spoke very highly of Merewether cricket and how much the club means to them both.

*****

With Rat and Dan Keating missing 4th grade were at full strength and played accordingly to rack up 5-311 courtesy of a superb century from Tim Forsyth.

Yes, that's right, the loopy leggie is back.

After taking a year off to "give the other kids a chance to catch up to me" we can look forward to some senseless comments from Timmy again this season.

*****

The Cowboy and Slog (C&S) teams got off to a flying start as well

The return of Big Merv was enough to frighten the opponents out for 48 and he snicked a few in his 27 not out as the A-grade lads cruised to 0-49

10-wicket wins in A-grade are few and far between.

*****

Varno's Veterans battled their way to 58 and were unlucky to go down by 8 wickets in AR1s

*****

And the club formerly known as the B52 Bomers made a successful start in AR4s

New Lions Paul "bucket dump" Smart top scored with 50 and Ryhs "The Pest" Haig took 2 wickets for The Warners Bay mafia who made 7-162 in reply to Nelson Bay's 160.
Training is great lads and don't let up or you will end up the size of Goffo, with an arm like Bushy's and as cranky as Moorey

MDCC End of Season Show
Thanks to Goody for organising the show last Saturday night at Townson Oval - good times had by all.

A couple of images that I left with on the night were:

AB still no tub at 11pm....doing Greggy Weller proud.

Damon Tindall taking out the MDCC Gift. An absolute running machine who had the crowd mesmerised with his white cheeks heading out into the night. Easily the quickest, congrats 'Hotstick'
